These Boots Are Made For Gardenin'

I’ve been looking for a new pair of garden clogs, shoes, or boots, for sometime now. I haven’t really found a desirable new replacement pair, as of yet. So, I thought I would simply ask all of you. This has been the impetus for VintageGardenGal’s Gardenin’ Survey today. I want to hear from you, your feedback. Please answer and comment on any, or all of these questions.

What is your favorite shoe, clog, or boot to garden in? Why? How long do you usually keep your garden boots?

What is your favorite garden tool, you can’t garden without?

What are your favorite garden websites and or garden blogs you follow? Can you list your top five to ten?

What kind of a gardener are you?  Sporadic?   Weekend?  Passionate everyday gardener?   When the mood hits me gardener?  Since you were a child?

What motivates you to garden?  How did you get started gardening?

Where do you look for help with your garden? Magazines? Blogs? Websites? Workshops? Nurseries? Friends? Professionals?

What garden trends are you seeing in your community? Your garden clubs? Your neighborhood?

In what ways do you think gardening today is different, from even five years ago?

VintageGardenGal is a garden lifestyle blog covering many categories. What is your lifestyle? What draws your attention to VintageGardenGal? What would you like to see more of?  Do you prefer “How To’s”?  The Unusual?  Garden tips?  More of the same?   Other categories?  Please feel free to comment, and please suggest your favorite footwear you garden in!

Wellies, sneakers, flip flops or barefoot depending upon the weather
Felco pruners and having my dogs for company while gardening
Vintage GardenGal and A Way to Garden
Consistent gardener, weeds don’t take long vacations nor should the gardener. Mom was my first garden teacher.
Motivation? A new plant, plants needing pruning, weeds, good weather
Information is sought from many sources. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
Vegetable gardens are popular here and mine has been a real joy this year
People are being careful with how they spend money on plants, tools, etc. and planning more wisely. Minimalizing the luxuries and garden decor. Also doing more work on their own without hiring a lawn service etc.
I like garden tips and advice on how to be thrifty and still have a beautiful garden.

While I am very modern in many ways, its the wisdom I learned from growing up on an island that serves me well. From having a year round vegetable garden to chickens. Its not only healthier but great fun. And the vegetable garden grows in size every year since we love sharing the excess with other who are on fixed incomes, out of work or simply in love with fresh vegetables of all kinds.

And chickens have been a part of my life since I was a kid. Everywhere we have lived here in California be it city or the Sierras, chickens have moved with us. One thing nice about vegetables is they can be planted in amongst the flowerbeds. And there is something wonderful in how a garden calms me.

And I love my Wellies, and in summer unless I am digging, I go barefoot. Love the smell of manure and fresh mowed hay. In fact I pull over when driving down the road if I see fresh mowed hay, roll down the window and inhale. Same with manure (laughing).

Have avoided the elitist garden tools and think back to the basics my family had that did the job well. Keeping tools clean and maintained is the key.

Gardens and chickens and Nubian goats are NOT a passing fancy or fad with us.

Plastic garden clogs, bought for $15 about 10 yrs. ago at the local hardware store (tried Crocs – too holey) and wellie type boots, the kind farm workers use (about 15 yrs. old).
Almost daily gardener.
Favorite tool – spade
Gardenening blogs: This one, and Garden Rooms
Books, classes, occasional professional design help, garden club, Garden Web.
Lifestyle: retired, interested in a lot, master of none, on a couple of acres.
Trends : Lower water use, naturalistic, mediterranean, succulents
What’s different? Understanding that we should use the soil and climate we live in – “right plant, right place”.
What I llike about your blog: see georgie’s comment. And – I also have chickens.

Hey Bonnie, I love the new wellies I just bought….problem is they are so cute I hesitant to wear them in the garden mud, but that’s what I bought them for. I’ll wait and wear them to the Wine Festival (if it’s raining which it usually is) and then mess them up in the garden. Otherwise I have a cheap pair of crocs I keep on the deck to wear outside. I tried to email you about a little problem we are having with our chicken coop but the email was ’sent back to me’ or rejected by the server. Can you email me with the correct email address? Thank you so much. (My email is on the sidebar of my blog) Have a great day Bonnie.

Lynn, I’m the same way with new things, have to live with them a while before using them. I have never had wellies, might have to try them. Thanks for your great comment…VintageGardenGal.
