Susan, the ones with prominent crowns might be roosters. Roosters usually have thicker legs and feet than hens, too. Also their neck feathers tend to be longer, and more pronounced. You are lucky to have Maran roosters and hens, as they are not that common. Take good care of them....VintageGardenGal

Hi! We have a small flock but like to add different breeds each spring. We hatch with the 7th grade science class at school during their bird unit and bring the babies to our home. We hatched quite a few black marans this year. They are 5 1/2 weeks old at this point and two have extremely prominant crowns and the others hardly have one. Is it possible at this point to tell hens from roosters based on their crown??

Chaney, on my homepage, www.vintagegardengal.com, up at the top under links, click through and you will see a Maran Chicken Club website. This website lists breeders all over the country. Good luck...VintageGardenGal

Marans are so hard to get your hands on in my area. How do you get true Marans I've been trying for almost 7mnths.

I have a Black and Copper Maren pair and a Birchen hen along with several other breed hens. I love my Marens. They are so tame and beautiful. Easy keepers, good layers and I love those hugh eggs. I even think they taste better than the other lighter colored eggs.

I bought a Cuckoo Maran back in January as a 4 day old chick. She laid her 1st egg today! Wow so pretty and dark.
I also read about how the egg is colored at the last few moments before being laid, very interesting. My Pullets name is Joan Jet, as she is so forward and pushy compared to my Cochin and 2 buff Orpintons.
I do have a funny story about my Chickens. When I 1st bought the 4 babies in January, I had just had my year old long coated Chihuahua spayed. The chicks were in a tub in the kitchen under the lamp. My Chihuahua went through some Hormone changes at this time, and she though the chick were her babies. She would stand on her back legs looking in the tub for 15 - 30 minutes . Now that they are in the coop, she goes and checks on them. They stand there and cluck at her. I showed her the eggs, and she licked them and wagged her tail.. Cracks me up.

I am moving to a 5 acre home with a small barn and have been planning on getting some chickens, mainly for eggs. Just as Jane Liedig, I have been Googling Marans chickens and considering their hardiness (I live in North Georgia and it's hot and dry right now), calm temperament, they are good egg layers and I have to admit I am intrigued by the dark chocolate colored eggs. Anyway, what I need is advice about any breeders of Marans. If anyone who is reading this blog can help me locate a good breeder of these chickens, your help would be most appreciated! I look forward to hearing from someone soon. Thanks!
